Bg8 g5 (g6) 2. fxg6 f5 3. g7# Easy chess mate in 3 in a position played by the high-rated chess players (White rated 2729 and Black 2702 on the FIDE rating scale). To mate, White uses zugzwang and the chess rule of en passant (from French: in passing): White first move the bishop on g8, and Black has the only legal possibility -- to move his g-pawn on g5 or g6. In the both cases, White takes the Black pawn at g6 (using the en passant rule if Black plays g5 on his first move). The second Black move is mandatory to play f5. On the third move, White mates by moving his pawn on g7...Back to top  Checkmate Puzzle 60 Solution 1. Qxh7+ Kxh7 2. g8=Q+ Kh6 3. Rh3# (Qh8#) This is the second puzzle on mate in 3. Please have a look at this position. The first feeling is that White can deliver linear mate along the g- and h- files because the Black king is isolated from the major pieces. The White g7-pawn is blocked and the Black h7-pawn is defended... To mate, the White queen takes the Black pawn with check and sacrifice to unblock the White pawn -- the Black king has to take the queen. On the second move, White promotes his pawn at check and the Black king has to move on h6. On the third move, White deliver linear mate by moving a rook on h3 or the newly born queen on h8.
