This is a famous historic mate in 2... The above position is taken from the famous Opera Game which was played between Paul Morphy and the Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard in 1858 at an opera house in Paris. In this position, Paul Morphy who played as White moved his queen on b8 to sacrifice and deliver check. After 1. Qb8+, Black has the only legal answer and must accept the sacrifice capturing the queen on b8 with his knight. On the second move, White delivers mate by 2. Rd8#. White has sacrifice the queen to deflect the Black knight and to clear d7 and d-file for the mating rook... Sacrifice with check to clear line for another mating piece.

This is another historic mate in 2... This position is taken from a chess game played by Johannes Zukertort and Adolf Anderssen in 1865. The mating motif for White is similar to that of the above checkmate puzzle... In this position, White sacrifices his queen and gives check by moving the queen on d8. After 1. Qd8+, Black has the only legal answer and must accept the sacrifice capturing the queen on d8 with one of his bishops. On the second move, White delivers mate by 2. Re8#. White has sacrifice the queen to deflect the Black dark bishop and to clear e7 and e-file for the mating rook... Sacrifice with check to clear line for another mating piece.
