      Solution to Puzzle 27
puzzle 27
1. Qxc7 f6 [1... Qxc7?? 2. Re8+ Rxe8 3. Rxe8#]
Just take it... The correct answer is 1. Qxc7!, and the Black rook is taken. Black may not answer 1... Qxc7?? because he will be checkmated in the following way: 2. Re8+ Rxe8 3. Rxe8#. This combination is based on the threat of back-rank mate.

      Solution to Puzzle 28
puzzle 28
1. Qe4 g6 (f5) 2. Qxa8
Again the mate threat combination... By moving 1. Qe4, White creates the mate threat 2. Qxh7# and at the same time attacks the Black rook on a8. Black has to prevent the checkmate (by moving 1... g6 or 1... f5) and has to lose his rook.
