Solution to Puzzle 37

1. Qxa4 Rf8 [1... Rxa4?? 2. Re8#]
In this position, White can easily win the Black rook on a4 in one move. To win, the White queen is just to take the rook on a4. The second Black rook may not take the White queen on a4 because of back-rank mate by 2. Re8#. Back to top
Solution to Puzzle 38

1. Rh2+ Kg5 2. Ne4+ Kf4 3. Rxa2 [1... Kg3 2. Nh1+ Kf3 3. Rxa2]
The correct move is to check by 1. Rh2+. After being checked, the Black king has only 2 legal answers: 1... Kg5 and 1... Kg3. Black moving 1... Kg5 or 1... Kg3, White will give a knight check with the discovered attack on the Black rook.
