      Solution to Puzzle 55
puzzle 55 for beginners
1. Qa3+ Kc3 2. Qxd6 [1... Kxa3? 2. Nc2#]
This is an example how to win a major piece using the mate threat. The White queen delivers naked, unsupported skewer to win the Black queen. The Black king may not take the White queen because of mating move 2. Nc2#.



      Solution to Puzzle 56
puzzle 56 for beginners
1. Nc4+ Kb5 (Kb4) 2. Rb6#
By moving 1. Nc4+, the White knight gives check and clears the b6 square for the White rook. To safely retreat, the Black king has 2 squares: b5 and b4. The White rook mates on the second move from the cleared b6 square.
