In the above position, the Black king is blocked by his friendly pawns on f5, g5. The White queen is attacking the next squares around the Black king: f6, g7, h7, h6, h5 (pay attention that h5 is attacked and secured by White). The Black king is staying on the safe square g6 and can move on f7... To mate in 1, the White bishop moves on the secured h5 to engage mate and win the game.

In the above position, Black is winning a lot of material by keeping an extra queen. And the only hope to win for White is to deliver mate in 1. You may see that White can easily give discovered check by moving his bishop out of the way of the rook on b1... But the Black rook on c7 may defend the Black king by moving on b7. How to deliver discovered check and mate in 1 here? To mate in 1, the White bishop moves and takes the Black pawn on e5 - to pin the Black rook on c7 (it may not move) and to open the friendly rook on b1 with discovered check and mate.
