      Solution to Puzzle 143
chess puzzle 143 for kids
1. Na3+ Ka1 2. Bc3#
In a real chess game, it is very very difficult to checkmate the lonely king with the king , knight and bishop. Sometimes, even grandmasters are not able to mate. There are special rules how to do this in real - not easy rules. In the pre-final position, the lonely king must be driven to a chessboard corner of the same color as the stronger party's bishop... In the above position, you see a correct pre-mate position. To mate in 2, the knight moves on a3 to check - and the Black king has the only square to retreat on a1. On the second move, the bishop mates from c3.

1. Ng5+ Kh8  2. Bg7#
In the above position, White has created correct pre-mate conditions to checkmate the lonely Black king with the king, knight and bishop... To mate in 2, the knight moves on g5 to check - and the Black king has the only square to retreat on h8. On the second move, the bishop mates from g7. Notes for you: In a game, if you play for the weaker party and in order to avoid being mated, keep your king close to the center or move it to a chessboard corner of opposite color of the color of your opponent bishop... By clicking the next link, you can see what is checkmate (mate) in chess.
