      Solution to Puzzle 147
chess puzzle 147 for kids
1. Nd3+ Kd7 2. Nxb2
In the above position, please pay your attention that the Black king on d6, the White knight on f4 and queen on h2 are on the same line - and the knight "shadows" its queen (if the knight moves aside, the queen will give so-called discovered check). To win the Black queen on b2, the White knight moves on d3 to "open" the discovered check combined with attack on the Black queen - the Black king should go on d7. On the second move, the White knight captures the Black queen on b2. You should remember this typical tactics to win material in chess - discovered check combined with attack on opponent piece.

chess puzzle 148 for kids
1. Bf5+ Kb8 2. Bxh3
In the above position, please pay your attention to the location of the Black king and that of the Black rook on h3 - they are staying on the same diagonal, and the rook is undefended. In this position, White can easily strike the bishop fork from f5... To win the Black rook on h3, the White bishop moves on f5 giving check and delivering the bishop fork - now the Black king should go on b8... On the second move, the White bishop captures the Black rook on h3 for free. You should remember a possibility of delivering the bishop fork - if the opponent pieces are located on the same diagonal, being undefended.
