      Solution to Puzzle 17
chess puzzle 17 for kids
1. Qf1#
Learn the following checkmate pattern using the above position. The Black king stays at the corner, and the friendly pawn on h2 prevent the king to move up... However, the Black king can still move on g1 and g2. Using this position, the White queen moves on f1 to mate in 1 - the queen attacks the king and covers g1 and g2.

1. Nb6#
The above position is interesting to learn as the next checkmate pattern, beautiful one to conduct. The Black king is locked all around at the corner - and one attacking move may be enough to mate. But if the White knight moves on b6, it will be taken by the a7-pawn. Correct? No. The White knight moves on b6 and mates in 1 - the a7-pawn may not take the knight because of pin. By moving on b6, the White knight cleared a4 for rook to pin the pawn. The White knight "opens the pin" and mates.
