      Solution to Puzzle 45
chess puzzle 45 for kids
1. Qxf7#
The position of this puzzle is well-known in chess. It is the pre-mate position of the Scholar's Mate. The above mate can be often met in the chess games at the initial level. White has moved the light bishop on c4 and the queen on f3. The both chess pieces of White are attacking f7. In this position, the White queen takes the Black pawn on f7 delivering mate in one - known as the Scholar's Mate. The best defense against the Scholar's Mate in the above position (instead of the previous bad move) is to move the Black queen on f6.

1. Rh5#
This puzzle will show you the next checkmate pattern... Please have a look at the position above. The g-7 square is attacked by a White pawn and 2 squares around the king are blocked by the Black pieces. The Black king can move on h6 and h8. The left White rook cannot move on h5 because it will be captured by the Black pawn on g6. But is it correct? No!.. The White rook can safely move on h5 to deliver rook mate - the White rook is secured because the Black g6-pawn is pinned by the bishop and may not capture the rook.
