      Solution to Puzzle 53
chess puzzle 53 for kids
1. Qd8#
This mate in one move is a typical checkmate in chess. It may happen when the mated king is on the back rank (rank 8 for the Black king and rank 1 for the White king) and stays "at the edge of the tube." Have a look at the position above. The Black king is on the back rank "at the edge of the tube". The tube is formed by 2 Black pawns on f7 and g7. The White queen moves on d8 to mate in one. The queen has attacked e8, f8, and e7.

1. Nh6#
This is another mate in one move, a typical one. 2 White pawns on f6 and g7, supporting each other, are attacking 2 squares around the king - f8 and h8. The h7-square is blocked by the Black pawn. The Black king is staying on g8 and can move only on f7... The right White knight moves on h6 to attack g8 and f7 at the same time, to mate in one.
