      Solution to Puzzle 73
chess puzzle 73 for kids
1. Nd6#
This chess puzzle and the next one are taken from real chess games, and they show the knight mate in opening. Let's see the opening position above... The Black king is surrounded by his own pieces and has no legal moves. The Black knight on f6 has been just developed and is attacking the White knight on e4... The attacked White knight moves on d6 to mate in one - the Black pawn on e7 may not take the attacker because the pawn in question turns out to be pinned by the White queen.

1. Nd6#
This is the second example of the knight mate in the opening phase of a chess game... The Black king is surrounded by his friendly pieces, but he has one legal move on f7. To mate in one, the left White knight moves on d6, attacking the Black king on e8 and the only escape square on f7. The chess puzzles on this page are examples of bad play in the opening phase of the chess game for Black. In the opening: fight for the center, develop your pieces, and secure your king.
