      Solution to Puzzle 77
chess puzzle 77 for kids
1. Nc7# (Ng7#)
This chess puzzle and the next one below will show you 2 examples of the discovered checkmate. Please have a look at the position shown above. The Black king is blocked around and can only move straight on e7. The White knight "covers" its rook on e1 that is ready to strike. There are 2 possibilities to engage the discovered checkmate in this position. The first one: the White knight moves on c7 to mate in 1. The second possibility: the knight moves on g7 to mate. This is the discovered mate which is a type of discovered attack (and in this case, it is also discovered attack with check and double check). Note: The double check cannot be met by interposing or by capturing the attacker because there are 2 attackers on the scene.

1. Bb5#
This is the second example of the discovered mate. But unlike in the previous puzzle, this one has the only solution. To mate in 1, the White bishop moves on b5. By moving his bishop on f5, White has delivered discovered attack with check, which is also double check, and discovered mate. Please analyze and think why White may not move Bf5. What will happen if White moves his bishop on f5?
