      Solution to Puzzle 83
chess puzzle 83 for kids
1. Qc5#
This is a typical position and another typical checkmate pattern to learn... The mated king is usually isolated from his own major pieces (rooks and queen). The White rook on a8 is attacking the a-file squares a6, a5, a4. The White queen is attacking the c-file squares c4, c5, c6. The White pawn on d4 secures the square on c5. To mate in one, the White queen moves on the secured c5.

1. Rf8#
This is the second position and another typical checkmate pattern to learn... The mated king is located on a back rank square (in this position - on b8) and partly locked by his own pawns on a7 and b7. The Black king cannot also move on c7 because the above square is attacked by the White knight... To mate in one, the White rook moves on f8... This checkmate pattern is similar to the pattern of delivering the back rank mate.
